The North Somerset Learning Exchange Programme for Phonics into Early Spelling is a unique phonics and early spelling programme for schools, fully aligned to the National Curriculum 2014. It does not do the teaching for the teacher but equips the teacher to teach well. For each of the nine steps of the programme, core word banks support the teacher to select appropriate words for the children to practise and apply newly acquired phonic knowledge. Extension word banks allow teachers to select more challenging vocabulary for children who are revisiting steps of the programme. Teaching and learning hints and tips, detailed guidance on the teaching sequence and exemplar planning are provided in each step. A phonics and early spelling monitoring proforma helps teachers understand and build on children’s prior learning.
The programme includes a booklet and CD-ROM of resources. The booklet provides an overview of the programme and guidance on all aspects of an effective phonics and early spelling programme, including:
- an introduction to phonics;
- feedback and marking;
- assessment and tracking children’s progress;
- supporting the development of phonic skills at home;
- monitoring and evaluating the quality of phonics and early spelling provision.
The CD-Rom includes:
- word banks and teaching notes for each step of the programme;
- resources to support: teaching; assessment; monitoring and evaluation;
- guidance for parents.
The authors are experienced teachers and members of the English team for North Somerset Local Authority.
